Junior goalkeeper Haley Smith has earned MVC Defensive Player of the Week following outstanding performances against CSUN and Eastern Michigan that helped the Redbirds go undefeated (1-0-1) in their opening week of play. This is the fifth time Smith has received MVC Player of the Week honors.
Smith had nine saves in an overtime battle Thursday night with CSUN, with four of them occurring after fulltime. She finished the week with 13 saves after adding four more in an Eastern Michigan shutout Sunday afternoon. Smith now has 15 career shutouts and 170 saves, and is only four saves away from moving up to fourth place in all-time career saves in Redbird history.
The Redbirds return to action Friday, Aug. 24, when they travel to Norman, Oklahoma to face the Sooners. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at John Crain Field. Illinois State will finish out the weekend with a match in Tulsa, Oklahoma with Tulsa at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 26.
