WATERLOO, Iowa – The Illinois State women's tennis finished the final day of the MVC Individual Championship with multiple Redbirds taking first, second and third place in their respective brackets on Sunday.
Junior Ivon Mihaleva took the championship in Flight 6, defeating Missouri State's Alyson Piskulic by a score of 7-5, 6-2.
"I am very happy to have won the number six singles flight today," said Mihaleva. "The first set was close and being able to win that gave me confidence for the rest of the match. Elena Jankulovska and I came up short in doubles losing in the deciding tiebreak, but we learned a lot from the match, and it will definitely be a positive thing for us in the future."
Freshman Elena Jankulovska took down UNI's Olivia Fain 6-0, 6-2 to secure the third-place spot in flight seven. Seniors Natalia Bravo and Laura Arciniegas both took second place in their brackets as well, after falling in their championship matches.
"We were very competitive in all four finals matches and I'm really proud of Ivon for coming away with a win," commented coach Maja Kovacek after the tournament.
The Redbirds will be back in action on Thursday, October 17, to take part in the ITA Regionals.
