NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State soccer student-athlete Logan Ziegler was awarded the Robert G. Bone Scholarship for the upcoming 2021-22 academic year, as announced by the university. The Bone Scholarship, the highest university-wide honor given to undergraduate students, includes a monetary award from the Bone Scholarship endowment. Recipients of the award will also be featured in a display at the Bone Student Center.
Ziegler joins former Redbird Kate Del Fava (2016-19) as the only soccer student-athletes to ever be honored as a Bone Scholar. The Burlington, Iowa, native holds a 4.0 grade-point average while majoring in Molecular and Cellular Biology and minoring in Chemistry.
"I am incredibly honored to have received the Robert G. Bone Scholarship," said Ziegler. "I am so thankful for my professors within the biology and chemistry departments, the Redbird athletic department, and especially my teammates for supporting not only my love for soccer but also my passion for the sciences."
Ziegler has played in 44 matches throughout her three seasons, logging 1,658 minutes on the pitch as a midfielder while scoring three goals. She helped the spring 2021 squad to a MVC Tournament semifinals appearance, converting ISU's second penalty kick in the 1-1 quarterfinal versus UNI to advance, 3-0, on the shootout.
"This is such an incredible accomplishment that Logan has earned," said head soccer coach Brad Silvey. "Logan has set the bar for academic excellence across our program since her arrival, so this is such a fitting and deserved recognition. The fact that she has been able to achieve so much academically while shouldering the load of a student-athlete is all the more impressive. As a staff and team, we are so proud of her consistent and tireless effort both in the classroom and within our soccer program."
Bone Scholars are selected through a rigorous campus-wide competition based on their scholarly achievements and their engagement and leadership in activities in the university community and beyond. Invited finalists submit a comprehensive portfolio including several essays and statements, a project, and five letters of recommendation. The mean grade point average of this year's Bone Scholars is 3.97 on a 4.0 scale.
Ziegler, along with track & field student-athlete Hannah Johnson, become the seventh and eighth student-athletes to be named Bone Scholars in just the last five years. They are also the 30th and 31st Redbird student-athletes in history to earn the scholarship named after the late Illinois State University President Robert G. Bone. The Karin L. Bone Athletics Study Center, which supports the academic endeavors of Illinois State student-athletes, is named in honor of the late Illinois State first lady.
Bone Scholars are students who combine broad and excellent academic achievement with campus and community engagement, while displaying outstanding qualities of character and leadership. The complete list of 2021-22 Bone Scholars can be found here.
