Redbirds secure Coughlan-Malloy Cup for the fifth-straight year

NORMAL, ILL.- The Illinois State track & field program secured the Coughlan-Malloy Cup for the fifth-straight year after defeating Indiana State in the annual dual, 160-139, on Saturday inside Horton Field House.

The Coughlan-Malloy Cup is unique in that the men's and women's team scores are combined into an overall score and the team with the highest combined total wins the traveling trophy.

"I was overall really pleased with the energy of the team", Director of Track and Field/Cross country Jeff Bovee said. "We've been working on our chemistry this season through team building. I think it really makes a big difference in the atmosphere. The athletes came together and had fun."

The Redbirds had a total of 15 event first-place finishers. Within that 15, six athletes had marks/times that put them in program history. 

The Redbird women won six individual events today, in addition to a first-place finish in the 4x400 relay. "On the women's side it was nice having Seven back and to get her rolling again", Bovee said. Seven Hicks ran a personal best of 7.39 in the 60m dash putting her tied for second in program history. Hicks received a first-place finish with this time.

Jaylin Holmes started the victory early for the Redbird men, as the freshman ran a 6.78 in the 60m. This time is Holmes'personal best and placed him sixth in program history for the 60m. 

In the men's hurdles, the Redbirds capitalized in the 60m hurdles, securing the top three spots. First place finisher, Brandon Ratliff ran a personal best time of 7.90 which places him 22nd in the NCAA. Ratliff is now third in program history. 

As a Redshirt Freshman, Mattison Plummer had her debut as she placed first in both the 1 mile and 800m run. Riley Wells was the 800m winner for the men, as he ran a 1:56.73. 

Maddi Exline's first place finish in the 3000m with a time of 9:48.52, which is her personal best. "It's really exciting to see Maddi accomplish a personal best in her first race out, on a 200m flat track," Bovee mentioned. 

For the men's 3000m the Redbirds had the top four finishes. Mathis Chavand came through with a first-place finish. 

Men's and Women's weight throw had a sweep, as Taylor Kesner and Amiri Buchanan both placed first. Buchanan threw a personal best with a throw of 19.78. Joe Boyerplaced first in shot put with a personal best throw of, 17.70. 

The women's pole vault was another record-breaking event. Windsor Roberts finished first with a vault of 3.80m, putting her 7th in program history. This vault was also Roberts' indoor personal best for pole vault. 

In the last event of the day, the women's 4x400 sealed the deal to a Redbird victory, as Bri Buggs, Seven Hicks, Lindsey Miller, and Nnenna Okpara, finished first over Indiana State.
