EAST LANSING, Mich. – Fresh off a successful two-match week, Illinois State women's tennis hits the road to East Lansing to face Xavier and Michigan State this weekend. ISU and Xavier meet at 10 a.m. Saturday while it will be the Spartans and Redbirds meeting at 10 a.m. Sunday.
The Redbirds (5-1) continued their hot start to the spring season as they took a clean 7-0 sweep over the Chicago State Cougars last Sunday from the Windy City.
Tijana Zlatanovic and Tara Damnjanovic continued their strong play as the number one doubles pairing for ISU, picking up the 6-1 win over CSU-W's Sofiya Sedovich and Cali Fuller. Then, the Redbirds secured the doubles point with a 6-3 result at number three, off the racquets of Nevena Kolarevic and Elena Jankulovska.
Then, in singles, Silvia Pomarolli made it 2-0 for ISU after picking up a 6-1, 6-0 win at number five. Shortly after, the match would be clinched by Damnjanovic at number four, as she collected a 7-5, 6-2 win over CSU-W's Manuella Eloundou-Ng.
Xavier (5-4) faces the Redbirds after seeing a match against the host Spartans Friday morning. Xavier would drop the doubles point and ultimately be behind 2-0 before Abby Nugent got them on the board with a win at number three singles. From there, the match was clinched for the visitors by Kat Lyman at number two, as she took a 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) result.
For Michigan State (4-3), the Spartans will look to respond with an afternoon meeting with Chicago State Friday before playing host to the Redbirds Sunday.
