Redbirds Prepare for Bryan Clay, Gibson Invitational

NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State Track & Field program is in action once more this weekend, as the Redbirds make the short trek to Indiana State for the Gibson Invitational as well as making a trip out West this weekend to Azusa, California  for the Bryan Clay Invitational. Both meets will have events from April 13-15.

The action from Cougar Athletic Stadium in Azua, Calif. is set to start on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. CT with the heptathlon 100m hurdles. ISU's first athlete will be in action Thursday evening as Claire Fuhlhage competes in heat 5 of the women's 3000m steeplechase.

Meanwhile, in Terre Haute, the Redbirds see their first event action on Friday at 12 p.m. CT in the men's hammer throw when a trio of Birds (Jacob Rollins, Anthony Smith, Amiri Buchanan) get things underway in the Gibson Invitational.

LAST TIME OUT

The Redbirds head to California this weekend after competing as part of a field of 27 schools at the Joe Walker Invite in Oxford, Miss. last weekend. Over the two days of competition, ISU saw five top-10 marks, a new school record in the 100m hurdles from Hassy Fashina-Bombata, and five overall event wins.

Bombata would finish second in the event with a time of 13.41, which is a new program record and breaks the previous record time of 13.51 set by Demetria Anderson in 2018. The time also stands as fastest in the MVC and #15 in the West region for the event.

The five event wins for Illinois State came from

  • Chase Knoblett in the men's decathlon 110m hurdles (15.70)
  • Cade Ward in the men's decathlon 1500m (4:35.22)
  • Cade Ward in the men's decathlon 400m (49.62)
  • Chase Knoblett in the men's decathlon 100m (11.19)
  • Women's 4x400m relay (3:40.12)
    • Third fastest outdoor event time in program history
