Redbirds Named ITA All-Academic Team; Nine Players Honored

NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State women's tennis team has earned 2023 Division I Women's All-Academic Team honors from The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) as all nine Redbirds were named ITA Scholar-Athletes on Monday by the organization. 

Academics are an integral aspect of the college tennis experience and adds to the unique student-athlete experience found on college campuses across the nation. Within the sport of tennis, student-athletes continue to exceed expectations in the classroom and on the court.

In 2023, a total of 1,513 Division I Women's student-athletes were named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, and 234 women's tennis programs were awarded the All-Academic Team distinction.

The Redbirds posted a spring team grade point average of 3.85, including having four players who posted a perfect 4.0 GPA. ISU took home the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title for the third time in five years, with wins in 2019, 2021 and 2023.

The Redbirds were led by the 2023 MVC Freshman of the Year, Nevena Kolarevic. Along with Kolarevic's honor, the 'Birds held three all-conference singles selections in Alexandra Abyasova, Tara Damnjanovic, and Kolarevic and a pair of All-MVC doubles teams.

To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, as student-athlete must have a grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year and be listed on the institutional eligibility form.

All nine Redbirds met the annual criteria as Abyasova, Othilia Brodin, Damnjanovic, Elena Jankulovska, Kolarevic, Zoe Limparis, Iva Poleksic, Tijana Zlatanovic, and Silvia Pomarolli were named ITA Scholar-Athletes for 2023.
