NORMAL, Ill. – Former Alabama girls golf junior champion and Auburn golfer Morgan Jones has signed on to be the newest member of the Illinois State women's golf team.
"We are thrilled to welcome Morgan to the Redbird family," said Illinois State head women's golf coach Breanne Hall. "She is an outstanding player whose game is well-rounded from tee to green. Her level of consistency and maturity on the course will be a huge asset to this team. Morgan has the innate ability to battle through adversity and sees it as an opportunity to push herself to work harder. She has embraced the vision of our program and understands what it takes to help elevate our team."
Jones was a two-time All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) Academic Honor Roll (2022 and 2023), and played in two tournaments as a freshman, averaging 78 strokes per round over her five rounds. At the Lady Bulldog Invitational (January 29-30, 2022), she tied for 32nd overall with a two-round score of 164 (86-78) and followed that with a three-round 221 at the Moon Golf Invitational (Feb. 20-22, 2022), where she shot a collegiate-low 74 in the final round.
She was the 2021 Alabama Girls State Junior Champion, as she shot a career-low round of 64 during the season. She has five top-five American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) finishes. She had a third-place finish at the 2021 Alabama Women's Stroke Play Championship. She won the 7A Alabama State Championship with Auburn High School in 2018 and 2019.
Earlier in June, Jones tied for 11th in the Women's Southern Golf Association (WSGA) Southern Amateur Championship with rounds of 76 and 75. Because of her performance in the first two rounds she advanced to the Match Play portion of the tournament, and advanced to the semifinal round.
The Redbirds won the 2024 MVC Championship at Annbriar Golf Club and advanced to the NCAA East Lansing Regional. The squad set program records for lowest season scoring average (297.5), and the most individual rounds at or under par in a season (35), while Jinyoung Yun's 72.563 stroke per round average broke the individual scoring school record by a stroke and a half.
