BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Coming off a pair of close 4-3 losses to start the spring season, Illinois State flipped the script and secured a 4-3 win of its own on Wednesday afternoon, as the Redbirds (1-2) defeated in-state foe Western Illinois (0-3) at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington.
The Leathernecks took the first point of the match, as they won the doubles points with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions. Illinois State's No. 3 tandem of Emma Lindh and Vittoria Benedetti were able to get the Redbirds a victory, as they defeated WIU's Nadezhda Petkova and Chloe Routier by a score of 6-4.
In singles action, the Redbirds were able to pull away for the victory thanks to strong wins at the top of the lineup. At the No. 1 spot, Lana Caculovic defeated Richardlyne Francois in quick fashion 6-2, 6-1, and at the No. 2 spot, her doubles partner Silvia Pomarolli earned a three-set win over Chloe Routier by a final of 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. WIU was able to get the win at the No. 3 spot, however Benedetti and Nuria Sanz each picked up straight-set wins to secure the victory for the Redbirds.
Illinois State will be back at the Evergreen Racquet Club on Sunday, February 1, when the Redbirds host Saint Louis in a non-conference matchup set for 12:30 p.m.
