AMES, Iowa – On the final day of the Iowa State Classic, Anderson Devonish tied the Illinois State 400-meter school record that had not been touched in over forty years.
A two-time MVC Indoor Champion and 2015 NCAA Outdoor All-American Honorable Mention performer in the 400-meter dash, Devonish's event-winning time of 46.50 at Saturday's meet ties Bruce Ijirigho's school record that was set in 1975. With the mark, Devonish currently ranks first in the Valley and 19th in all of Division I.
"Capturing two wins and one school record today capped a fantastic weekend for the sprints and hurdles crew," said Associate Head Coach Brenton Emanuel. "It was great to see Andy compete on such a high level, and he is ready to do something special. We are right where we want to be as we head into MVCs."
Ben Montgomery and Ashleigh Wilson also competed in the 400-meter dash, recording solid performances of their own. Montgomery finished sixth with a time of 48.18, while Wilson placed seventh in a season-best 56.16.
Competing in the 60-meter dash, Derrius Rodgers continues to dominate. Winning the event today with a time of 6.72, Rodgers has now won every 60-meter dash competition (both prelims and finals) that he has been entered in this season.
D'Jenne Egharevba also ran well in the 60-meter, finishing second with a time of 7.52.
The Illinois State men's and women's track and field teams will be back in action next Saturday, Feb. 17, in their final tune-up before the 2018 MVC Indoor Championships on Feb. 24-25. The majority of the Redbird squad will travel to Champaign, Illinois, to compete in the Orange and Blue Invite. Qualifying athletes will return to South Bend, Indiana, for the Alex Wilson Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame.
