ST. LOUIS – Both the Illinois State men's and women's track and field teams placed six student-athletes on the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team, which was announced Wednesday.
On the men's side, Bastian Hauk - Jegen earned a 4.0 grade-point average in project management and finished sixth in the javelin last weekend, while sophomore Jesse Hahne's 3.83 in pre-vet medicine also earned him the honor. Hahne placed eighth in the 5,000 meters at the Indoor Valley Championships. Aidan Askin's eighth-place finish in the 1,500 meter run at the Outdoor Championships earned him a spot on the team as well.
CJ Hamilton earned a 3.47 GPA in English and had three top-eight finishes at the Indoor Championships, including a first-place finish as a part of the 400-meter relay. Tyler Rippel finished third in the Indoor 800 meters and also compiled a 3.41 grade-point average in the classroom. Tyler Morse rounded out the honorees for the men, earning a 3.27 GPA and placing in the top-eight in both the 3,000 and 5,000 meters at the Indoor Championships, along with an eighth-place finish in the 5,000-meter run at the Outdoor Championships.
For the women, six Redbirds earned a spot on the Scholar-Athlete Team. Kim Christensen and Ashley Kamin led the way with 3.60 grade-point averages. Christensen placed second in the distance medley relay at the Indoor Championships, while Kamin finished third in the mile. Kamin also placed sixth in the 1,500 at the Outdoor Championships.
Jackie Mink carried a 3.40 grade-point average in the classroom and placed sixth in the 800 at the Outdoor Championships. Sarah Mussallem was a member of the ISU 100-meter relay that placed third last weekend in the Outdoor Championships. In the classroom, Mussallem compiled a 3.38 grade-point average in elementary education. Right behind Mussallem was Kelly McShea. McShea had a 3.37 GPA and won the 3,000 and placed third in the 5,000 at the Indoor Championships. Haley Goers rounded out the honorees with a 3.29 mark in the classroom to go along with an eighth-place finish in the 5,000 last weekend and two top-eight finishes at the Indoor Championships.
Fifty-eight men and 59 women were named to this year's Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete team. This honor is given to student-athletes who have maintained at least a 3.2 GPA, are at least a sophomore in academic and athletic standing, and placed in the top eight at the Indoor or Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
